Backside Pick's newest album is a smooth but twisting journey. Mellow grooves are woven artfully with thick bass lines and strident brass. Opening with old school, 70's style horns in the song "No Change", the palpable energy only grew as they slid into the killer intro to "Sweet Thang". Halfway through the set, Backside Pick gets melancholy and soulful, making "This Is The Way" an instant favorite. Of course, "Shake It" picks it immediately back up into pure fresh funk sound.

the better of these acts develop huge (and hugely devoted) fan bases, thanks to that same area scholarly influence. We're talking 200 to 400 folks who will, on a weekly basis, pack Denton hotspots as diverse as Hailey's, The Boiler Room or The Greenhouse to catch favorite acts like Oso Closo, New Vintage, Fatty Lumpkin (the openers on tonight's bill), and, yes, Backside Pick, too.

Like this one:

MDM: So, What is Backside Pick for you?

Ottley: For me it's the music I want to hear, the music I want to play. The reason that I play it, is because its the music I like to listen to. That's the way I like to approach most music, especially in this genre, which I would consider to be Dance, but I tell people its Funk because most people relate to Funk. When they think of Dance, they think of Techno, and not exactly our style of music. So for me, Backside Pick is my own personal genre of dance music.

And this one:

MDM: If you were a god, what would you do for the world?

Ottley: Hmm. Plant s**t.
